Born in 1965 in Oxford, England, Rafferty is entirely self taught and consumed with a passion for plein air painting in both Oil and Watercolour. The influence from 19th and 20th century masters is evident in Rafferty’s work. From the light of Sarolla to the Englishness of Seago, every painting is about light and it’s play on the subjects he depicts. Having the fortunate opportunity to live in California and the South of France, Rafferty’s work is infused with an abundant source of light, each location being a staging point where he can travel with his Pochade box through Europe and the United States gathering material to express his vision.

“I hope that wherever or whatever I paint, my hand and style shine through”

Rafferty says of his varied locals and subject matter, “a still life holds the same inspiration as a landscape for me, the way light falls across an object revealing it’s form and essence”. Represented by fine galleries throughout the country and in many fine private collections Rafferty will carry on in much the same way, every day a different challenge, every subject a unique light.

Paul Rafferty on Open Box M :

"My relationship with Open Box M is, as with all other artists I'm sure, one of friendship, admiration and dedication. I am thrilled that they not only exist but that they hand build the finest painting equipment one can buy. In the well thought out and ever expanding choices Open Box M offers, the artist can find the perfect tool. Lately I have been leaning on my 6x8" Palm Box which in my opinion is the perfect traveling companion, unobtrusive, self contained immediately at the ready. In a world of mass production and faceless companies Open Box M is a breath of fresh air."
