LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN

Open Box M began developing the Palette/Panel Holder over 30 years ago and the design remains one of the most loved, lightweight and versatile Plein Air easels that is on the market today.

TRIPOD FITTING

Every Palette/Panel Holder will have the regular 1/4 inch, 20 thread count tripod fitting and it will be located on the underside of the palette. This is the same fitting that is found on the underside of a camera and this is the fitting that allows the device to then be attached to the top of any regular, sturdy camera tripod.

PANEL HOLDER

The Palette/Panel Holder can be adjusted to hold a wide variety of either panels or stretched canvas. All four sizes will adjust down to a minimum of 5 inches horizontal. The Palette/Panel Holder's patented spring arm system can extend beyond the outer edges of the panel holding surface to hold much larger pieces. The solid Brass arms that are able to hold the panel or stretched canvas in place "grip" the desired painting surface from the sides and will not interfere with brush strokes. The tension on the arms can be adjusted to accommodate for a heavier painting surface, such as a melamine board or even a thick piece of plywood. Also, the vertical position of the desired painting surface is able to easily be adjusted, even while the Palette/Panel Holder is in use.
The minimum and maximum horizontal holding capacities are listed below for each size.

8 x 10 Palette/Panel Holder:    5 inches to 15.5 inches (horizontal)
10 x 12 Palette/Panel Holder:    5 inches to 17.5 inches (horizontal)
11 x 14 Palette/Panel Holder:    5 inches to 19.5 inches (horizontal)
12 x 16 Palette/Panel Holder:    5 inches to 24 inches (horizontal)

There is not any vertical limitation to the panel or canvas when using the Palette/Panel Holder.

MAIN PALETTE MIXING AREA

The highest quality of Baltic Birch is used for the palette mixing area. Every piece of Birch is hand selected for the best grain pattern to be used within the palette mixing area. Each individual size of Palette/Panel Holder will have a different dimension of palette work space.

SET UP INSTRUCTIONS

SIDE PALETTE EXTENSION

Every Palette/Panel Holder will come with one Side Palette Extension that can be attached to either the right or left side of the main palette mixing area. This extension serves as a shelf for brushes and/or palette knives and also can be used for more palette mixing area.

Many artists are able to further customize their Open Box M Palette/Panel Holders by making changes to their box once they receive it from Open Box M. One popular customization is drilling holes into the Side Palette Extension to allow for the vertical storage of brush handles.

SIDE SUPPORT ARM

The Palette/Panel Holder's patented and adjustable Side Support Arm slides out to the rear of the box when the Palette/Panel Holder is opened and gives very solid support to the panel holding surface. Unlike "torque" or "friction" hinges, the Side Support Arm will not move once it is engaged. This means that the painting surface will not move once the lid portion is locked securely into place wherever the artist desires... anywhere from 90 degrees to completely flat.
